FluxFormer: A Survey of Contemporary Taiwan Sculptures, 2024

After Taiwan’s social and political “lifting of martial law” in 1987, the public was most impressed by the expansion of the media, the freedom of thought, and the social and cultural phenomenon of free speech. Art, as a medium that carries one’s aesthetic thoughts, cultural views and verbal expressions, has also been affected by the impact and influence of the lifting of martial law. Instead of the individual-centeredness of being left to its own devices, art practice has begun to activate the thinking and vision reacting with the social pulse. It can be said that the evolution and issues of contemporary sculpture in Taiwan have taken the “post-martial law” as a milestone to move forward.

In the 21st century, globalized operations, constantly updated and optimized information networks, logistics systems, applications of technological medias, etc. have evolved from standardization and mass production to diversification, differentiation, personalization and even reverse production mechanisms led by users themselves. In the face of the rapidly developing contemporary visual culture and the public perceptual habits are no longer passive, the Juming Museum intends to organize the “Contemporary Taiwan Sculpture Exhibition” from this year onwards. In addition to promoting contemporary sculptors with creative insight and gathering contemporary sculptures of special quality for display, the exhibition also hopes to build a favorable environment for two-way communication between artists and the public, and to promote a better understanding of contemporary sculpture.

<FluxFormer: A Survey of Contemporary Taiwan Sculptures, 2024>

This year’s exhibition theme refers to the ancient saying “Heaven and Earth have righteousness, and they present in always fluxing forms”, with the hope to focus on Taiwan’s contemporary sculpture art, from distant viewing to close appreciation, from individual expression to collective presentation, all of them can give people a new feeling of diversified interests and diverse styles. In view of the international trend of contemporary sculpture in the 21st century, it has moved from the formalism/modern theories towards the complete freedom and boundless expansion. Also, the sculpture sector in Taiwan, whether in the academy or in the private sector, has gradually ceased to indulge in/constrained itself in the “sculpture essence”, and shifted from the anxiety of “how it should be” to the pleasure of “how it can be” in the thinking and practice of sculpture creation. In short, the trend of individualized expression, autonomous thinking and diversified development can be regarded as a norm rather than an anomaly.

This exhibition, curated by art critic J.J. Shih, invites twelve Taiwanese contemporary artists to participate in the exhibit, hoping to present the rich and diverse scenes of Taiwan’s contemporary sculpture through works of varying practices and styles. The works in this exhibit include two categories: first, the large-scale sculptures in the outdoor area, which not only allow the artists to engage in creative dialogues with the existing works of Ju Ming, but also jointly create a brand-new landscape of earth-art for the park. The second is the indoor sculpture exhibition, in which each of the participating artists has their own “self-expression” area, and the arrangement of the works in each area is designed to guide the viewers to actively engage in “Parallel Appreciation” and “Comparative Reading”.
